Three top players from the Indianapolis area are ready to get the new season underway after pinning down the next step of their careers. De'Airra Goss of Ben Davis, Karli Harris of Fishers and Daress McClung of Lawrence North are all heading out of state after their prep careers. They join a growing list of 2009 recruits as the signing season approaches.

Ben Davis swing forward De'Airra Goss (right) has given her verbal commitment to Western Michigan head coach Tasha McDowell.

As a junior, Goss averaged 10.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 1.0 steals per game on a stacked Ben Davis team. She was stead with a 48.0 field goal percentage from the field. After a strong showing last season, Goss was named All-MIC, All County, All Metro and Third Team All State.

"DeAirra Goss is a great example of what high school athletics is," says long-time BD head coach Stan Benge. "She works very hard and continues to improve herself in all facets of the game and life. I am not very familiar with Western Michigan's basketball program but... I do know they will love having DeAirra on there team next year."

Goss, who is one of three D-I caliber players on the Giants squad, chose the Broncos over Valparaiso, citing a good feel and fit with the Broncos program. She intends to pursue a career in psychology.

Goss and her teammates are on a mission this season. There's some payback to be made by last season's No. 1 ranked 4A team after falling to eventual 4A state champion Carmel in the Regional finals last February. Carmel will be rebuilding this season after the loss of some key seniors, but Ben Davis is fully locked and loaded, as the Giants did not have a single senior on last year's roster.

"We are looking forward to the upcoming basketball season," says Benge. "We have everybody back from a very successful 2007-08 team. The girls have worked hard over the summer and improved there basketball skills. If the team chemistry is there and the girls continue to want to improve, this could be a very special year. Our schedule will probably be the toughest in the State which should be a real challenge for us." Photo from the BDHS Girls Basketball website.

Fishers point guard Karli Harris has given her commitment to Oakland head coach Beckie Francis. According to the Indianapolis Star, the 5'5 guard chose the Grizzlies over options at Loyola, IUPUI, Valparaiso, Youngstown State, Samford and Southern Alabama.

As a junior, Harris averaged 14.3 points (39% fg), 5.2 steals and 2.7 assists per game  for Fishers head coach Michael Gaines. The Tigers were 16-6 last season, falling to eventual 4A State Champ Carmel in Sectionals.

Harris joins two other Hoosier natives with her selection of Oakland, which will bring her close to home twice a season when the Grizzlies play IUPUI and IPFW in the Summit League. North Central's Kira Carter will be a frosh at Oakland this coming season, while Seymour junior Kristin Turner will join Harris in Rochester, Michigan, for the 2009-10 season. Oakland is a year-in, year-out top contender in the Summit League.

South Junior All-Starr Daress McClung of Lawrence North will be headed to the Big East and Cincinnati after her final high school season. The 6'0 guard/forward gave her verbal to Cinci head coach J. Kelley Hall. As a junior, McClung averaged 14.5 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.2 blocks per game while helping her team to a 20-4 record under head coach Jodie Whitaker.

According to the Indianapolis Star, McClung chose the Bearcats over options at Illinois State, Missouri, Northwestern, George Washington and Miami (OH). She is hoping for a good deal of playing time as a freshman, with the goal of breaking the starting lineup.
