No doubt Kem Zolman and his assistants spent some sleepless hours overnight thinking about what the senior All-Stars need to work on today to improve their play after a defeat last night at the hands of a talented junior group. In the first exhibition game of a jam-packed All-Stars week, the Seniors lost to the Juniors 86-80 after going without a field goal in the last 4:40 of the game.
The Seniors led at halftime, but just by a tenuous 41-38 score at the break. Early on the seniors led 19-9, but the juniors went on a 20-10 run to tie it up 29-29 with about five minutes to go in the half. After falling behind 38-35, Miss Basketball Brittany Rayburn pulled the seniors ahead at the break with 6 straight points.
In the second half, the Juniors capitalized on the absence of Bloomington North's Alex Guyton, who fouled out with just under six minutes to go in the game. They finished on a 14-5 run to win the game. Ben Davis guard Alex Bentley (right) was spectacular in that effort. The 5'6 speedster was unstoppable with a game high 27 points to go with 7 rebounds and 4 assists.
Despite the loss, the Seniors received it's best production out of Purdue recruits Rayburn (15 points) and Guyton (13 points, 10 rebounds). They will face the juniors again on Wednesday in Marion.
Watch out for this junior group next season. They were able to defeat the seniors without the services of Skylar Diggins (South Bend Washington) and Kelly Faris (Heritage Christian), who are both at the USA U18 National Select Team trials in Colorado Springs.
