2006 IBCA-IHSAA Showcase provides opportunities
Region Roundball Review

08/01/06 05:04 pm by RRR | Back

The 4th Annual IBCA-IHSAA Girls Basketball Showcase was held on July 22, providing both players and college coaches an opportunity to "be seen" during the all-important July NCAA observation period. While some players were hoping for a first look from coaches, others were hoping to solidify their recruiting positions.

A couple of the high-level players expected to attend did not show at the event, including Becca Bruszewski of Wheeler and Sydney Smallbone of South Bend St. Joseph's. A few others did not attend, mainly due to injury, some severe. However, the competition was lively and fierce, even during the drills portion of the day. All players were putting forth their best efforts to get noticed by the college coaches in attendance.

Over 70 college coaches were at the event, including representatives from the coaching staffs of all of the Indiana Division I schools. A good number of schools were represented from the Midwest. Many were pleasantly surprised to also see UC-Santa Barbara assistant coach April McDivitt, who was Miss Basketball in 1999 and who made a name for herself at the college level while at Tennessee and UCSB. McDivitt, hired by the Gauchos as an assistant last season, is a fan favorite in Santa Barbara.

We have some photos and notes from the day's events:

Senior Jackie Gill (21) of North Central makes a move on her

defender, Butler recruit Kaley May of Avon, during the drill portion of the afternoon.

Kouts senior Jaclyn Jessen (right) blocks out senior Showcase teammate

Kasey Thompson of Oak Hill during a rebounding drill.

Terre Haute South senior Megan Craft (right) looks for an opening around the defense of

Manchester senior Audrey Siebrase during the first round of games.

Rising sophomore Jessica Hull, daughter of South Bend Adams head coach Jeff Hull, watches

the action while on crutches. Hull will be the top returning scorer (12.5 ppg) for the Eagles next season.

Ft. Wayne Luers head coach Teri Rosinski gives instruction prior to the rebounding drills

for the Red and Maroon teams.

Coach Rosinski gives instructions to a new group before drills get underway. Each group spent eight minutes at each of eight

stations during the afternoon session.

Sophomore Charye Richardson of Lafayette Jeff heads down the floor during

the Gold Team's game against Royal in the morning session.

Richardson's new head coach, Jan Connor, was keeping a watchful eye

on her developing 5'7 guard during the day. Connor says she is looking forward to

getting back into the high school coaching ranks and is hoping to introduce

the Bronchos to a more disciplined style of play that includes more emphasis on defense.

The losing group during afternoon drills competition takes their punishment in push-ups before moving on to the next station.

Hamilton Southeastern head coach Chris Huppenthal (right) catches up on the latest Northwest Indiana basketball news with

Portage head coach Kristen Peterson during afternoon drills.

Crown Point senior Courtney Perry walks off the

court at the end of the afternoon session. Perry was one

of 12 players from NWI in attendance at the Showcase.

West Lafayette senior Michelle Oswalt, who committed to

Miami (Ohio) in February, catches her breath between drills.

Junior Kara McClintic of Tell City (left) tries to outrun the hard defensive

pressure of Anderson sophomore Whitney Clark in the backcourt.

Everyone was hoping to get a glimpse of Tennessee recruit Sydney Smallbone at the Showcase

on Saturday, but she was not in attendance. However, taking her place and her jersey number was

late addition LaTice Jones of Gary Roosevelt. The 5'11 senior forward definitely raised her stock on

Saturday, turning some heads with a variety of eye-popping moves to the hoop. As a junior, Jones averaged

20.2 points, 10.7 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game for the Panthers.

Huntington North junior Amber Clark (right), who is getting offers and looks from a variety of

Division I programs, positions herself for an inbounds pass during drills.

Rushville junior Lacey Hornaday gets a quick one off over the

defense of Huntington North junior Amber Clark.

Triton Central sophomore Kelsey Larkey (center) gets a body on Westview

junior Tiffany Fisher during a rebounding drill. Hamilton Southeastern

senior Michelle Harrison also runs in for the rebound.

Ben Davis sophomore DeAirra Goss brings the ball up as junior teammate Jennifer Engle of Martinsville

indicates she is going to set a pick for Goss to head toward the wing.

Boone Grove senior Cortney Flanigan listens to instructions

prior to participating in a skills drill.

Marion junior Ronikka Drake makes her move to get open for a pass behind

the the defense of Cortney Flanigan of Boone Grove.

Hamilton Southeastern senior Michelle Harrison brings up the ball against the

defense of Hebron senior Cindi Boricich.

Hebron's Cindi Boricich looks to make a pass under heavy defensive pressure.

Pendleton Heights junior Taylor Miller didn't let a small thing like a wrist cast

prevent her from participating in the day's events. Here she looks to prevent

a pass from Muncie South senior Tyronda Benning.

Floyd Central senior Emily Batlinger gets a shot off during a drill in the

afternoon. Brittany Schoen (#93) of South Central, Marah Kyle (#69) of

Bluffton, and Lisa Samplawski (#92) of Portage look on.

Southport senior Katie Ahaus looks for the open player against the defense of (L-R)

Allison Matheis of Northeast Dubois, Megan Craft of Terre Haute South and LaTice Jones of Gary Roosevelt
