ANDREAN FRESHMAN TOURNAMENT - CHAMPIONS!

Crown Point 43, Lake Central 13 – For the second time this season, the Crown Point Freshman Lady Bulldogs dominated the Lake Central Lady Indians in a pair of contests on Thursday, January 24th. This time, the battles were won on the ‘Dogs home court, pushing their record to 15-0.

In the "Red" game, Mallory Michaels scored 10 points, Mary Kvachkoff added 9 points, and JoAnna Heneghan and Jennifer Strempka pitched in 7 and 6 points respectively, as CP cruised to a 43-13 win.

C.P. led 5-0 after one period behind the scoring of Stephanie Sandilla and Mallory Michaels. The Lady Indians hung around for a while throughout the first half, as the Bulldogs held a 16-7 advantage at the end of the second period. JoAnna Heneghan scored 5 of her 7 points in the quarter, along with Kvachkoff, Whitney Brown and Mallory Michaels.

The ‘Dogs then went on a 12-2 run in the third to take a 28-9 lead, putting LC away for good. Michaels added 5 points in the quarter with Teresa Kaminski, Melissa Cooper and C.C. Martinez also getting on the board.

Jennifer Strempka scored all six of her points in the final stanza, and Mary Kvachkoff added seven more, as C.P. outscored the Lady Indians 15-4 over the six minute period.

In the "White" game, JoAnna Heneghan and Lindsey Morfin scored 8 and 7 points, respectively as the ‘Dogs captured the nightcap by a score of 30-17.

C.P. opened up a 7-1 first quarter lead, but Lake Central fought back in the second quarter to pull within two at halftime, trailing just 13-11. A pair of Heneghan baskets opened the third period, and a pair of Anne Walter free throws began to seal the fate of the Indians. LC scored just once in the quarter as Crown Point opened up a 10-point lead.

A C.C. Martinez basket midway through the fourth period gave CP their largest lead at 15. The Lady ‘Dogs were never challenged after that.

Crown Point 23, Plymouth 17 - The Crown Point Freshman Lady Bulldogs remained undefeated with a 23-17 win over a tough Plymouth squad on Wednesday, January 23rd. C.C. Martinez finished the night with 8 points, and Teresa Kaminski contributed another 5 points to lead the scoring effort for Crown Point.

The ‘Dogs trailed 9-8 after one quarter, with Kaminski, Martinez and Mallory Michaels providing the early scoring. Anne Walter tied the score with a free throw early in the second period, and Michaels would give C.P. a brief lead with a basket shortly thereafter.

Plymouth managed to knot the score at 11 with a pair of free throws before the Lady Bulldogs went ahead for good on a basket by Martinez with just under two minutes remaining in the half. Plymouth would only manage to muster two points in the quarter as the ‘Dogs led 14-11 at the break.

Martinez again opened the scoring in the third, and Missy Cooper added a trey as C.P. held a four point advantage after three at 19-15.

Stephanie Sandilla stretched the lead to six early in the fourth, as the teams went scoreless for over two minutes before Martinez connected again to give the ‘Dogs their largest lead at eight points. Plymouth would only counter with a pair of free throws late to close out the scoring.

Coach Brian McClanahan’s squad is now 14-0 with just three contests remaining.

Crown Point 38, Highland 10 - If author Charles Dickens had been a basketball fan, he could have easily crafted "A Tale of Two Halves" after watching Crown Point's Freshman Lady Bulldogs on January 17th. The 'Dogs picked up their "lucky number 13" win of the season by defeating the Lady Trojans 38-10, but not after receiving the closest thing to a scare they've had all season.

The game took on the tone of two entirely different halves, with the ball control-minded Trojans pushing the 'Dogs to a 9-9 tie at the end of the first half. For whatever words of wisdom were offered in the locker room at halftime by coaches Brian McClanahan and Beth Jacobs, the story line was rewritten in the second half. Crown Point would explode on a 29-1 run to put the Lady Trojans away, keeping the Bulldogs' perfect record intact.

A combination of early cold shooting by CP and Highland's ability to sustain a rebounding advantage kept the game tight for the first twelve minutes of play. Mallory Michaels opened the scoring with two and a half minutes gone in the first quarter, and scored again over a minute later as Crown Point jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Highland finally got on the board at the buzzer and trailed 4-2 at the end of one period.

In the second period, Jennifer Strempka sandwiched a 15-footer in between a Whitney Brown free throw and basket to put the Lady Bulldogs up 9-4 with 4:00 minutes remaining before the half. Highland closed the gap to three points one minute later, setting the stage for a Lady Trojan trey to knot the score at 9-9 with two minutes left in the half. Neither team could get on the board again before heading to the locker room.

Missy Cooper scored early in the third period, followed by a Mallory Michaels basket just :40 seconds later while being fouled in the process. Despite needing attention for an injured knee, Michaels converted the three point opportunity before heading to the bench for a rest. Jennifer Strempka, subbing for Michaels then connected on another long jumper, following up a Stephanie Sandilla basket, and the 'Dogs were suddenly up 18-9.

C.C. Martinez took over from there, scoring 7 of the next 9 points to give CP a 27-9 third quarter lead. Michaels would also return during the same stretch to score once more for her game high total of 9 points.

Anne Walter and JoAnna Heneghan would then combine for nine straight fourth quarter points, including a Heneghan three-pointer, as the Bulldogs attempted to keep Highland off the board for the entire second half. Highland finally managed to pick up a lone free throw with :35 seconds remaining to avoid the second half whitewash. The Lady Bulldogs added one more bucket on a nice combination of passes in the game's final moments. C.C. Martinez gained control of a loose ball and found Missy Kiefer open at mid-court. Kiefer then picked up a nice assist after threading the needle through the Highland defense with a bounce pass to Jennifer Strempka who converted at the other end as time wound down.

In addition to Michaels' 9 points, Martinez picked up 7 points and grabbed 6 rebounds along with 4 steals. Jennifer Strempka added 6 points, while Teresa Kaminski dished off 5 assists and Stephanie Sandilla picked up 4 steals.

Crown Point 34, Rensselaer 10 - The Freshman Lady 'Dogs just kept rolling along on Monday, January 16th with a dominant 34-10 performance over the Lady Bombers of Rensselaer. It was the twelfth victory of the season for Crown Point against no defeats. Eight different Lady Bulldogs got on the scoreboard as CP was never challenged in the contest.

Once again, Crown Point allowed only one first quarter basket, and then shut their opponents out throughout the remainder of the half. Crown Point opened up quarter-ending leads of 10-2 and 20-2 in the first half. They held their largest lead of 27 points by the end of three quarters at 32-5, and again late in the fourth at 34-7.

C.C. Martinez led a balanced scoring attack with 8 points while Mallory Michaels and Anne Walter each contributed 6 points.

Crown Point 36, Hobart 13 - Despite good ball movement and a solid rebounding presence, shooting woes plagued Hobart's Lady Brickies as the Crown Point Freshman Lady Bulldogs picked up their eleventh consecutive win of the season on Thursday January, 11th. By evening's end, the Lady 'Dogs captured another pair of games to remain undefeated for the 2000-2001 campaign. CP ran away in the "Red" game by a margin of 36-13, and then dominated a two-quarter "White" game by a score of 16-2.

Crown Point struggled against Hobart's size early in the first game, and held a 6-1 advantage after the first quarter. After Stephanie Sandilla opened the scoring, the Bulldogs were kept off the scoreboard for the next three and a half minutes before Teresa Kaminski managed to bang home a jumper. In the meantime, Hobart could only muster one free throw in the quarter as the 'Dogs held a 6-1 advantage after a pair of Anne Walter free throws.

It would get no better for Hobart in the second quarter, despite their ability to grab a number of offensive rebounds. Despite getting good looks at the basket, Hobart couldn't get a single shot to drop. The Brickies were shut out in the period while Crown Point put five players in the scoring ledger. Baskets by Sandilla, Kaminski, Mary Kvachkoff and Melissa Cooper, as well as a Whitney Brown free throw gave the Bulldogs a 15-1 half-time lead.

Hobart hung with Crown Point in the third, but still trailed 23-7 at the close of the period. Mallory Michaels and Teresa Kaminski dominated the fourth quarter as Michaels would score all of her game high 12 points in the second half.  Kaminski would finish with 9 points as well as 5 rebounds and a half dozen steals.

In the "White" game, C.C. Martinez and JoAnna Heneghan scored 7 points apiece including a trey for each as Crown Point dominated the Lady Brickies by a score of 16-2.  Martinez scored all of her points in the first period while Heneghan provided all of the second period scoring.

Jennifer Strempka added a basket to Martinez' total to help the 'Dogs open up a 9-0 lead after the opening quarter. Despite struggling with a number of inside shots of her own, Strempka still managed to pull down 8 rebounds and pick up 5 steals over two quarters.  Heneghan would also contribute 5 rebounds of her own in the contest.

Crown Point 29, LaPorte 9 - Season win Number 10 came at home for Crown Point's Freshman Lady Bulldogs against the Lady Slicers of LaPorte on Monday, January 8th. The 'Dogs have yet to lose a game this season, including the "White" games against conference opponents and teams with larger rosters.

The 'Dogs started slowly in the featured "Red" game, but stretched it out in the second half for a 29-9 margin of victory. C.C. Martinez scored the lone basket in first quarter to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.  Following a JoAnna Heneghan basket, LaPorte countered with a three-pointer to take their only lead of the game at 5-4. Mallory Michaels and Stephanie Sandilla then added baskets of their own to put CP in the lead at 8-5 at the intermission.

Sandilla and Michaels then turned it up a notch in the third as the Bulldogs scurried out on a 12-2 run in the third. The highlight of the period was a 30-foot buzzer beater launched by Whitney Brown that found a perfect angle off the glass as the horn sounded, giving Crown Point a 20-7 lead.

Martinez, Teresa Kaminski, Missy Cooper and Anne Walter closed out the scoring in the final period as the 'Dogs again outscored the Lady Slicers, this time by a 9-2 margin.

Stephanie Sandilla put on an impressive performance by adding 8 rebounds and 5 assists to go along with her 5 points on the evening.  Michaels and Martinez would share scoring honors with 6 points apiece. Kaminski also added 5 steals and picked up 3 rebounds.  Anne Walter also contributed 3 boards in the contest.

In the "White" game, JoAnna Heneghan and Jennifer Strempka scored 10 and 9 points respectively in a physically played 40-28 victory. Strempka would also snare 5 rebounds and grab 4 steals in the nightcap. C.C. Martinez and Mallory Michaels added 6 points each and Lindsey Morfin another 5 in a game which saw Crown Point hit more shots from the free throw line than from the field. The 'Dogs would hit only eleven times from the field, including a pair of three-pointers, but picked up sixteen tosses from the charity stripe.

The margin of victory should have been wider, but despite hitting sixteen free throws, CP actually struggled form the line. The pace of the game was slow dramatically by numerous fouls sending two LaPorte players to the bench for early exits with five fouls apiece. Despite the physical nature of the game, the 'Dogs hung tough and kept LaPorte at a distance to keep their perfect record intact.

Crown Point 65, Chesterton 7 - The Crown Point Freshman Lady Bulldogs were crowned champions of the 2001 Andrean Freshman Women's Tournament last Saturday, January 6th, with a pair of wins over Chesterton's Lady Trojans and the host Andrean Lady '59ers. The 'Dogs remained undefeated in the process and moved their season record to 9-0.

Crown Point did little wrong in their tourney opener by drubbing Chesterton for the second time this season. CP had already defeated the Lady Trojans by a 40-point margin earlier in the year. Coach Brian McClanahan's Bulldog pups scored early and often en route to a 65-7 domination of their Duneland Conference opponent.

C.C. Martinez led the way for Crown Point with 12 points and 6 rebounds. Melissa Cooper added 9 points including one basket from outside the three-point arc. Mary Kvachkoff and Anne Walter each scored 7 points and grabbed 5 rebounds, with 5 of Walter's 7 points coming from the free throw line. Mallory Michaels, Teresa Kaminski and Stephanie Sandilla each contributed 6 points apiece.

Missy Cooper recorded 5 steals with Kaminski and Jennifer Strempka each picking the Lady Trojan pockets four times. Cooper had already picked up her fourth steal in the first quarter with 3:08 remaining when she converted at the other end to give the 'Dogs an 8-0 advantage. Crown Point would eventually go up 14-0 before Chesterton managed to get on the board. The Lady Bulldogs led 22-2 at the end of one quarter and carried a 36-6 lead into the locker room at halftime.

It only got worse for Chesterton as they failed to score in the third period and could only muster one free throw in the second half. Crown Point led 55-6 after three quarters before widening the lead to their 58 point margin of victory with 0:46 remaining in the game.

It was solid effort in most every aspect of the game as eleven different Bulldogs got into the scoring ledger. CP utilized patient ball movement along with a smothering defense forcing Chesterton into numerous turnovers. The Lady Bulldogs shot well from the floor hitting nearly 50% for the game.

Crown Point 23, Andrean 12 - In the championship game, Crown Point squared off against the host school's Lady '59ers, who had defeated Merrillville earlier in the day. Andrean proved to be a more formidable opponent, giving the Bulldogs all they could handle for the better part of four quarters before falling 23-12.

Both teams sized each other up early in the game, with Andrean jumping out to a 2-0 first quarter lead. Crown Point had a number of good scoring opportunities, but couldn't get their shots to drop. Keyed by a defensive performance which brought the crowd to life in the second quarter, things began to fall into place for Coach Brian McClanahan's team.

Anne Walter scored from inside and was fouled in the first minute of the second quarter. Walter converted the free throw and the Bulldogs were in the lead for the first time. Mallory Michaels then connected on pair of buckets including a three-pointer pushing the lead to 8-2.

Andrean hung tough and trailed only 12-6 at the mid-way point in the game. C.C. Martinez opened the scoring after halftime with the first of her two buckets in the game and Teresa Kaminski nailed a trey to give CP a 17-10 lead with 2:08 remaining in the quarter. Anne Walter then converted a buzzer beater from underneath and the Lady Bulldogs had their largest lead after three periods at 9 points.

Martinez and Michaels knocked in a pair of baskets in the final period, but by that time the defenses had again dug in and Andrean was unable to close the gap.

Mallory Michaels finished with 7 points and Anne Walter capped a fine performance throughout the day with 5 points of her own.

Crown Point 15, Merrillville 11 - It wasn't pretty, but the CP Lady Bulldog freshmen managed to fend off a physical Merrillville squad to keep their perfect season rolling along with another win on the road. The Lady Bulldogs battled the weather elements this past week before finally squaring off with the Lady Pirates on December 14th after two separate game cancellations. The Crown Point freshmen are now 7-0 on the season.

In the "Red" game, Teresa Kaminski, Mallory Michaels and Stephanie Sandilla provided all of the first half scoring punch as CP maneuvered to a 10-3 lead at the half. Melissa Cooper's three pointer to start the third quarter, and a basket by Mary Kvachkoff gave the Lady Bulldogs their largest lead at 12 points after three.

The Pirates managed to close the gap to 7 on a three-pointer by Merrillville's Heidi Hammond with two and a half minutes remaining in the game. Hammond then scored again with just under a minute to go and added a free throw with :19 seconds remaining as the Lady 'Dogs managed to hang on after going scoreless in the fourth quarter.

The "White" game was limited to two quarters as it was in the Chesterton game with Crown Point again taking the win by a 14-4 margin. Kvachkoff and Whitney Brown each scored a basket in the first quarter as the teams locked up in a 4-4 tie. In the second period, C.C. Martinez and JoAnna Heneghan each scored twice and Jennifer Strempka scored on an offensive rebound to finish off a 10-0 scoring run to put the Lady Pirates away.

Crown Point 48, Chesterton 8 - The Crown Point Freshman Lady Bulldogs remained undefeated by dominating the Lady Trojans from Chesterton with a pair of wins on Monday, December 4th. In the "Red" game, Mary Kvachkoff led the way with 10 points while Mallory Michaels and C.C. Martinez added 8 apiece.

The Lady 'Dogs were in command of this game from start to finish. Michaels scored 7 first quarter points as Crown Point took an early 15-5 lead. Whitney Brown then connected on a three-pointer ten seconds into the second quarter before Kvachkoff went on a scoring run with 8 straight points of her own. Chesterton could only manage one free throw during the second period. By the time C.C. Martinez added a pair of baskets in the final minute, the Lady Bulldogs were on their way to the locker room with a 30-6 halftime lead.

The Lady Bulldogs went nearly four minutes into the third period before scoring again, but still managed to shut down the Chesterton offense at the same time. The 'Dogs outscored the Trojans by a 12-2 margin in the final stanza. Crown Point missed a number of inside shots throughout the contest, keeping the inflated margin of victory lower than it could have been.

The "White" game was limited to two quarters of play with Crown Point again dominating en route to a 14-2 victory with five different Lady Bulldogs contributing to the scoring.

Crown Point 46, Lake Central 15 - The Crown Point Freshman Lady Bulldogs took to the road for the first time this season on Wednesday, November 29, and dominated Lake Central's Lady Indians in a pair of contests to remain undefeated on the season.

In the "Red" game, Mallory Michaels and Amanda Wirtz scored 8 points apiece while Melissa Cooper, Teresa Kaminski and Stephanie Sandilla each added 6 points in CP's 46-15 win in the opener. The 'Dogs charged to a 16-4 first quarter lead and never looked back, leading 25-10 at the half, and 35-13 after three quarters.

Michaels, Wirtz and Sandilla did most of the damage early in the contest, as Missy Cooper again followed up with another pair of three pointers in the second and fourth quarters.

In the nightcap, Jennifer Strempka picked up 9 points and Anne Walter collected 6 more as the "White" team defeated Lake Central 35-11. Much like the first game, this contest was never in doubt as the Lady Bulldogs dominated early holding a 13 point advantage by half-time, and extending the lead to 17 after the third quarter.

The Lady Bulldogs' staff and team members are only hoping for good news after Amanda Wirtz went down with a knee injury during the second game.  Wirtz' status will be determined following an evaluation of the injury.

Chesterton's Lady Trojans will be next in line for Crown Point on Monday, December 4.

Crown Point 35, Kankakee Valley 10 - The Crown Point Freshman Lady Bulldogs completed their four-game home stand with another victory on Monday, November 27, by beating Kankakee Valley's Lady Kougars 35-10. For a while it appeared that Kankakee Valley might be able to hang with the 'Dogs as they worked the ball well early in the contest.

Missy Cooper connected on a three pointer to give CP an early 7-2 lead, but the Kougars came back with patient ball movement and smart shot selection to close the gap to 7-6 with just under two and a half minutes remaining in the first quarter. Stephanie Sandilla would close out the quarter scoring for Crown Point with a pair of free throws and an inside basket off of a nice feed from Amanda Wirtz giving the 'Dogs an 11-6 lead after one period.

It all went south for the Kougars from there. Kankakee Valley could only muster a pair of buckets in the third period, and were kept off the scoreboard entirely in both the second and fourth quarters. CP played well defensively during the stretch, with Sandilla picking up four steals on the evening and Teresa Kaminski providing her tenacious brand of defense.

The Lady Bulldogs were lifted to a 19-6 halftime lead with Missy Cooper launching her second trey of the game during the second period. "Coop" would then dish off a pair of nice assists to both Mallory Michaels and Kaminski as the 'Dogs went up 25-10 after three quarters. CC Martinez picked up a pair of baskets in the final stanza as Crown Point went on a 10-0 run to close out the scoring.

Mallory Michaels led the scoring effort for CP with 8 points, while Missy Cooper and Stephanie Sandilla contributed 6 points apiece. Sandilla also grabbed 6 rebounds and dished off 3 assists. Mary Kvachkoff pulled down 4 boards while Wirtz and Martinez each collected 3 rebounds.

The Lady Bulldogs take to the road for the first time this season on Wednesday, November 29 against Lake Central.

Crown Point 27, Valparaiso 17 - The Crown Point Freshman Lady Bulldogs remained unbeaten on the young season with a pair of wins over the Valparaiso Lady Vikings this past Tuesday, November, 21 at CPHS. Stephanie Sandilla and Mallory Michaels each scored 7 points in a 27-17 win over their Duneland Conference foes in the "Red" game. Teresa Kaminski and Whitney Brown added 6 and 5 points, respectively, as a stingy Lady Bulldog defense held Valparaiso to just three points in the first half, and scoreless for the second quarter.

CP held a slim 5-3 advantage at the end of the first quarter behind the scoring of Michaels and Kaminski. Valpo struggled to put up many first half shots and finally scored with 0:46 remaining in the first quarter on a three point play by Melissa Klancer. Klancer converted a free throw after being fouled on a bucket underneath, and would provide most of the scoring damage for Valparaiso, leading all scorers with 9 points on the evening.

The 'Dogs went on a 7-0 run in the second quarter behind Sandilla and Brown. Sandilla scored five in the quarter including her own conversion of a three-point play after being fouled on a basket one minute into the quarter. Sandilla and Brown had solid performances in the both the "Red" and "White" contests.

The Lady Vikings closed the gap to within four at 14-10 with just over a minute and a half to go in the third, but a basket by Michaels and a buzzer-beating three pointer by Whitney Brown opened the lead back to nine. Sandilla, Kaminski and Michaels provided all of the scoring punch Crown Point needed in the final period to keep Valpo at bay.

In the "White" game, the 'Dogs were forced to fend off a furious late game rally by the Lady Vikings, but managed to squeak by with a 29-26 win. Jennifer Strempka finished the evening with 6 points and Anne Walter and Alex Mossbarger scored 5 points apiece in the contest.

CC Martinez scored on a pair of jumpers while Strempka took a beautiful feed underneath from Stephanie Sandilla as Crown Point opened a 6-0 lead. Whitney Brown would tally a pair of free throws as the Bulldogs led 8-3 at the end of one period. Mary Kvachkoff sandwiched a nice jump shot in between a free throw and basket by Anne Walter, as the Lady Bulldogs continued to lead 13-7 at the half.

Strempka scored twice from inside in the third, once on an offensive rebound, and again on a feed in the lane from Anne Walter. Walter hustled underneath to keep a missed CP shot from heading out of bounds and surprised everyone when she caught up to the errant shot and wheeled around to dish off a nice bounce pass to her teammate driving into the lane. Missy Kiefer also connected in the period as CP held it's largest lead to that point at eleven after three quarters.

Alex Mossbarger scored the next 5 points, and Lindsey Morfin added a trey as the lady Bulldogs again led by eleven with under two minutes remaining. Time would eventually run out on the Lady Vikes, but not before putting a scare into Crown Point. Valpo would pressure the 'Dogs into several mistakes as they went on an 8-0 run to finish the game, coming up just short in their comeback attempt.

Kankakee Valley is next up for Crown Point on Monday, November 27.

Crown Point 28, Michigan City 25 - The Crown Point Freshman Lady Bulldogs continued their winning ways Thursday night with a pair of wins over the Michigan City Wolves at the Doghouse. The two games, however, couldn't have been more of a study in contrast.

The "Red" game featured a close struggle, culminating in a 28-25 win for the lady Bulldogs behind a scoring barrage by Mallory Michaels. Unofficially, Michaels hit 7 of 13 shots from the field including a pair of free throws to finish the evening with 16 points. Missy Cooper added a pair of three pointers for 6 points, the latter winding up as the final margin of victory.

Michaels went to the basket early and often, scoring 6 first quarter points as the 'Dogs jumped out to an early 8-6 advantage. Missy Cooper connected on her first three-pointer mid-way through the second quarter as both teams struggled to get on the board. Both teams would only score once more in the period before heading to the locker room with CP leading 13-8.

Michaels then went on a scoring binge in the third, scoring all 10 of the Lady Bulldog points in the quarter. CP held its largest advantage at 21-12 with just over a minute and a half left in the quarter when the Wolves began to claw their way back into the game. Three consecutive buckets matched Crown Point's total for the quarter and the lead was narrowed back to five heading into the final period.

Michigan City pulled to within three at 23-20 early in the fourth. The game appeared to be in hand with CP leading 28-22 as the final minute began ticking away. With just seven seconds remaining on the clock, Michigan City's Tekisha Martin launched a high-arching three pointer that brought dust off of the CP rafters. Suddenly, the outcome was in doubt with Crown Point holding a 28-25 advantage. The Wolves, however were forced to foul Missy Cooper twice as the 'Dogs burned away the final few seconds.

Stephanie Sandilla and Amanda Wirtz each grabbed five rebounds during the game, and CC Martinez pitched in with four boards. Wirtz also dished off three assists in the contest. Teresa Kaminski recorded five steals and turned in a strong defensive performance.

In the nightcap, the "White" team thrashed the Wolves by a score of 40-17. Jennifer Strempka led the way with 8 points, 5 rebounds and a handful of steals. Despite a wrist injury, CC Martinez connected once from three-point territory, finishing with 7 points and 6 rebounds. All of Martinez' scoring damage was done in the second quarter.

JoAnna Heneghan added 6 tallies on two three-pointers to go along with her 5 boards. Anne Walter also put in another consistent performance with 6 points and 4 rebounds. Mary Kvachkoff led all CP rebounders by picking off seven boards in the "White" game in addition to her work in the early game.

The lady Bulldogs were never challenged in this contest as they put the ball up a total of 57 times from the field, connecting on 17 shots. CP also unofficially grabbed 34 rebounds for the game. The 'Dogs held advantages of 13-2 after one quarter and 26-7 at the end of the first half. CP also received help from Michigan City at the start of the third, as the Wolves inbounded the ball and streaked the wrong way for an uncontested lay-up into the Crown Point basket. Michigan City could never muster more than 6 points in any quarter as the CP advantage continued to open up throughout the second half.

During the evening, both Missy Kiefer and Whitney Brown got into the scoring ledger for the first time this season. Kiefer got on the board in the third quarter with a long shot from outside, but the officials spotted a toe on the three-point arc, keeping her point total to 2. Brown has been a steady performer while pulling double duty as a starter in the "White" game, and backing up Missy Cooper on the point in the "Red" games.

Next up for the frosh Lady Bulldogs are the Valparaiso Vikings on Tuesday, November 21.

Crown Point 32, Portage 20 - The Crown Point Freshman Lady Bulldogs opened their 2000-2001 basketball season at home this past Monday, November 13, under the direction of first year coach Brian McClanahan. Crown Point took both ends of their first conference doubleheader against the Portage Indians by winning the "A" game 32-20, and following up with a 33-25 win in the "B" game.

Starting the "A" game for the Lady ‘Dogs were Melissa Cooper, Mallory Michaels, Teresa Kaminski, CC Martinez and Amanda Wirtz.

Kaminski and Michaels dominated the scoring early as CP raced to an early 13-2 first quarter lead. The pair combined for 11 straight points in the quarter after an Amanda Wirtz basket from inside knotted the score at 2-2. Kaminski would finish the game in double figures with 10 points while Michaels finished with 8 points on the evening.

Portage fought back in the second quarter, drawing to within 6 at 13-7 before Crown Point scored a pair of buckets by Mary Kvachkoff and Anne Walter. The Lady Bulldogs took an 18-11 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

CP opened up a ten-point lead at 24-14 after three quarters, as Teresa Kaminski again looked strong offensively scoring a pair of baskets. CC Martinez closed out the third quarter scoring off of a nice steal with 1:23 remaining. Martinez drove downcourt, stopped dead in her tracks and put on a terrific head fake as two over-committed Portage defenders blew past.

The Lady Bulldogs would take their largest lead in the fourth quarter at 30-16 on a three-point shot by Missy Cooper. Stephanie Sandilla closed out the scoring for Crown Point off a nice feed from Mallory Michaels.

The "B" game turned out to be a more physical affair, with plenty of play on the floor and both teams going to the free throw line frequently. Crown Point scored 11 of their 33 points from the charity stripe including six of Anne Walter's game high eight points.

CP led 11-8 after the first quarter, but Portage came back to tie the score at fifteen apiece at the intermission. Both of Crown Point’s second quarter baskets were scored on short jumpers by Amanda Wirtz, who along with CC Martinez, were a physical presence inside all night.

Mary Kvachkoff, Lindsey Morfin and JoAnna Heneghan would combine for nine points to take a 24-15 lead by the end of the third quarter while the Lady Bulldog defense kept Portage off the scoreboard for the entire six minutes. Heneghan would finish with 7 points in the game.

With both teams in foul trouble in the final stanza, Portage would fight back forcing Coach McClanahan to settle his troops down by calling a pair of time outs. The Indians pulled to within six at 28-22 when Jennifer Strempka drove to the basket for her second field goal of the night, and then followed up with a nice assist inside to a wide open Lindsey Morfin who converted the uncontested layup after shedding her defender in the paint.

With CP holding their largest lead at ten points, Portage connected on a three-pointer to draw back to within seven. It was too little too late, however, as the final 1:23 ticked away with both teams scrambling for control of the ball. Anne Walter connected on her final free throw opportunity to seal the final margin of victory.
