Post-Tribune Staff Report

Renee Turpa didn’t stay out of basketball long.

Turpa, the girls basketball coach at Portage for 17 years, has been named the Director of Basketball Operations for the Valparaiso University women’s basketball team. Turpa resigned as the Portage coach after last season.

Her job at Valpo will be to direct the summer basketball camps, assist with on-campus recruiting and community outreach projects and help with travel arrangements and film exchange. She’ll continue to teach at Portage. Turpa was unavailable for comment Wednesday evening.

“We’re excited to have someone of the character and integrity of Renee on our staff,” Crusaders coach Keith Freeman said in a release. “She has a wealth of experience and will be a valuable part of our program.”

Freeman also announced that Caroline McCombs has been promoted to Associate Head coach and that Erika Roudebush will become an assistant coach.

McCombs has been at VU for six season. Roudebush was the Director of Basketball Operations last year.
